For charities wanting a simple conflicts of interest policy. This will not be suitable document for non-charities or a charity that is likely to have substantial complex conflicts of interest, such as a corporate foundation.

Is this right for me?

This document is right for your organisation if:

  • Your organisation is a charity that:
    - does not currently have any complicated issues with conflicts of interest (e.g. beneficiaries who are also trustees, situations where all trustees may have a conflict of interest); and
    - is happy to take a strict approach to managing conflicts which is that any trustee with a possible conflict of interest is not permitted to vote on matters in relation to which they may have a conflict.

This document is not right for your organisation if:

  • Your organisation is not a charity; or
  • Your organisation is a charity that:
    - has or is likely in future to have complex issues relating to conflicts of interest, for example, if your organisation is a corporate foundation, or has beneficiaries or employees that sit on the board; or
    - wants to be able to authorise conflicts so that affected trustees can participate in decision making in certain situations.

What do I need before I start?


• You should have a copy of your charity’s governing document to hand. You won’t need any additional information beyond the name of your organisation to complete this form.

Remember: If you don’t have everything you need you can make a start, save the information and return to complete the form another time.
